Coffee morning, June 2019ILLUMINATED LETTER EXHIBITION (22 June, 2019 - 10:00 am to 5:00 pm)

Please come along and view some beautiful calligraphy this Saturday and support a wonderful cause. More details below.

The Artist

The gold framed artworks on display are original works created by Jill Larmer, Illustrator and Calligrapher.   Originally from New Zealand and of Irish heritage, Jill now resides in Putney.  Many of Jill’s works are to be found in private collections in Europe and Australasia.  As a classical guitarist, Jill became very interested in the illuminated scores for Lute during her studies in the mid-90s and, with her military and heraldic knowledge, took this research to a higher, practical level.  It was a life-changing challenge.  Creating such work involves extensive research, drafting, and attention to the use of authentic traditional methods and materials.  There are one or two very special items in this exhibition which use for their illumination, real 23 carat shell gold on vellum sourced from William Cowley Limited, of Newton-Pagnall:  one of very few remaining vellum works in the world.

The History

There are historically only 16 letters in the original Celtic “alphabet”.  Jill designed the remaining 10 from the inspired graphics of the originals to create the full modern series. The originally 16 illuminated letters were the decorative headers of the Books of the Old Testament in the ancient bibles created for the Kings and Emperors of Europe.   The majority of letters here are inspired by the highly ornate Bible of Charles the Bald II of 983 AD.

The Works

These works are special in so many ways.  All materials used are non-toxic versions of their predecessors and the paper is pure hot-pressed cotton, enabling fine detail to be drawn and the watercolour blended to stained glass standard.  All works are framed with very high standard Museum grade framing, mounting and AcuVue glass which prevents fading and the entry of normal household moisture and damp levels.

ALL WORKS ARE FOR SALE
