On 8 February, 2020, Putney Methodist Church will be hosting an ambitious staging of Britten's opera Noye's Fludde, as part of the church's 150th anniversary. Find out more details and how you can get involved here.
In reason's ear they all rejoice,
and utter forth a glorious voice;
for ever singing as they shine,
'The hand that made us is divine.'
Noye’s Fludde is a short opera by British composer Benjamin Britten, written to be performed in a church setting by a combination of amateur and professional musicians. It tells the story of Noah’s Ark, using the text of Chester’s Mystery Plays from 1375, which were also written to be performed in, and by, a worshipping community. This performance, on the 8 February, 2020, is an outreach initiative from Putney Methodist Church bringing together a whole range of local groups across the circuit and community to perform together and build relationships between the church and our neighbours. Music is a profound meeting-point between the sacred and the secular, and an accessible way to invite people to experience the hospitality and creativity of our community.
The piece is approximately 50 minutes along and incorporates hymns with which many people will be familiar. It includes a chorus of children (playing the animals), and their music is easy to learn and a lot of fun. We hope to provide chances for children to explore movement and mask-making as part of the project in such a way that involves both young people who are confident performers, and those who are shy and nervous!
We are delighted that at least one of our local schools will be joining the project, and the Putney Methodist Church Singers will provide the backbone of our choir. But we still need recruits! If you would like to join the choir (easy music with plenty of rehearsal time), then everyone is welcome and there is no audition; please get in touch with Jessica on firstname.lastname@example.org. Choir rehearsals will be on 9, 16, 23 and 30 January, and on 6 February, and we would ask you to attend at least three of these. If you know of children who would like to join the children’s chorus, we will be running workshops and anyone is welcome to join (email Jessica). We also need musicians to join a scratch orchestra – no matter what you play please also get in touch! Finally, we need soloists – we will be having informal auditions, email Jessica if you’d like more details. Everyone is very welcome, please do share these details with friends, or with music groups who are associated with your church.
We are very excited for this project and would love as many people from across the circuit to join us. We hope it will be a unique opportunity to invite new people through our doors, enrich the life of our local community and glorify God through song and welcome.
